We all get impulsive at times. After all, in this life of seeking (more and more), we get through lows as well. And in that time period, we resort to risk-taking and impulsivity.

Two cognitive tools: cognitive appraisals and implementation intentions come to our rescue.

Adam is an impulsive foodie. A sample cognitive appraisal can be:

Spending money on yummy food is like exchanging wealth for a reward. After all, human brain like of other mammals create reward. Now as I splurge my hard earned money inadvertently, my reward gets lesser and lesser. In order to keep as many rewards I can, I need to address unnecessary expenditure.

Brief Analysis:

Of course, we, humans, are used to getting rewards as we pursue our goals. The best type of reward enriches us. It doesn't make deprive us.

Another way to look at it is to compare instant gratification to delayed gratification. And see where do we land.
