All things Creative!
It always gets down to:
1) Earning money efficiently: Normally organizations strive for cost cuttings, higher sale volumes, increased demand creation and thus, more profits and revenue.
2) Production over Creation: With capitalist economies, there is more emphasis on automated production as compared to manual or semi-automated creation. Once design phase is over, we come to prototyping. The objective is to introduce those changes over product lifespan that lead to greater adoption and hence more revenue. Anything that doesn't add to preceding goal is difficult for Creatives to paddle forward with looming production deadlines. Other factors such as complexity of design and availability of tools, materials are considered. So, creativity is bounded.
3) Psycho-social Considerations: Happiness is central to our lives. With emphasis on production, we remain under continuous stress. Also as competition increases, crunch times increase in frequency and period.
4) Learning: Over-emphasis on productivity cause our learning goals to get aligned with increased revenue and profits potentials. Any learning that doesn't immediately contribute to said goals is frowned upon.
5) Psychological Safety and Creative Management: Creatives require certain mental safety in order to create. Calculated risks need to be encouraged and emphasis on effort is essential to sustain a growth mindset. Distribution of creative work and constitution of creative teams is fundamental to Creative Management.
6) Flexibility: Creatives come in all shades. Therefore, they need flexibility with respect to time and space. Some might find workplace comfortable while others may prefer working from comfort of their homes. Some creatives are nocturnal while other are regular morning people. But flexibility shouldn't come at the cost of coordination and collaboration.
7) Emotional Intelligence: Creatives are fundamentally very sensitive. This trait enables them to see novel connections and see patterns that might escape common folk. However, abundance of stimuli taxes them mentally. Conflicts get under the skin due to emotional reactivity. With these issues, it's expected of Creatives to respond emotionally. That requires moderating the length of period when it comes to decision making and avoid rash decisions.
8) Openness: Being less presumptive and less judgemental of others, more expansive work spaces lead to boosts in openness in experience, harmony, inclusion and creativity.
9) Well-being: Best medicine is prevention. Instead of pumping (or rather, I'd say draining) money into health, fostering well design conditions and contexts leading to calmer and relaxed minds is the key to Creatives' well-being. Favorable conditions at work shall lead to less churn and increased fulfillment.
10) Complementary, Collaborative, or Competitive: Fore-mentioned are different modes we find ourselves in when working in different groups, teams or with various individuals. Having a positive work culture, or having abundant funds or budgets along with financial safety lead to qualitative work.
